A simple chemical route to selectively eliminate metallic carbon nanotubes in nanotube network devices.

چکیده
Semiconducting-only single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network field effect transistors (FETs) have been fabricated by selectively reacting all the metallic SWNTs in the devices with diazonium reagents in a controlled manner. We have shown that the concentration of diazonium reagents used is crucial for selectively eliminating metallic SWNTs and keeping semiconducting ones intact. Excessive amounts of diazonium reagents can indiscriminately react with both metallic and semiconducting SWNTs and thus degrade the performance of the devices. This new technique will facilitate the process of fabrication of high-performance SWNT-based electronic devices.

Aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) synthesized by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method have exceptional potential for next-generation nanoelectronics. However, the coexistence of semiconducting (s-) and metallic (m-) SWNTs remains a considerable challenge since the latter causes significant degradation in device performance. Here we demonstrate a facile and effective approach ...
متن کاملVectorial Growth of Metallic and Semiconducting Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes
A new approach for vectorial growth of single-wall carbon nanotube arrays is presented. The origin of growth is defined by patterning the catalyst nanoparticles, while the direction of growth is defined by a local electric field parallel to the substrate. Statistical analysis of the nanotube angular distribution indicates that field-directed growth can discriminate between metallic and semicond...
متن کاملPhysical removal of metallic carbon nanotubes from nanotube network devices using a thermal and fluidic process.
Electronic and optoelectronic devices based on thin films of carbon nanotubes are currently limited by the presence of metallic nanotubes. Here we present a novel approach based on nanotube alkyl functionalization to physically remove the metallic nanotubes from such network devices. The process relies on preferential thermal desorption of the alkyls from the semiconducting nanotubes and the su...

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are grown via chemical vapour deposition method directly on a stainless steel substrate. Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy are the techniques chosen to characterize the structure of the synthesized carbon nanotubes: few structural defects are detected. After their removal from the stainless steel substrate, the as-grown MWCNTs are then a...
